History
Palo Alto was originally home to the Ohlone Tribe and was discovered by Don Gaspar who explored the area in 1787 when he camped alongside El Palo Alto, the tree which now symbolizes both Palo Alto and Stanford. Palo Alto was originally home to many mills, vineyards, and race horses. After the Stanford University continued to grow and the opening of Stanford Industrial Park, Stanford Shopping Center, and Stanford Medical Center, Palo Alto’s population grew more. Thousands of homes were built and Joseph Eichler was one of many who helped build them, which led the Palo Alto population to double from 25 to 55 thousand people.
